Rome Via Panisperna the palace

The palazzo

The photos show Via (street) Panisperna in 1880 and in 2000-a typical evolution for "the Eternal City." The third photo shows the "palazzo" (palace). In this street Fermi and his "boys" discovered nuclear energy.

The palace is first to the left, with arches on the ground floor. It faces another palazzo completely covered with ivy. This apartment, like its twin, was restored and redesigned by the proprietor, a hospitable and kindly doctor of architecture, who is also an art decorator. His attention to detail is evident throughout. The hall of the palace is ample and has a nice frieze . This impeccable apartment is 100 sq. meters (approx. 1050 sq. ft.) It is quiet, bright, and like its twin apartment, it is on the first floor.

Montii two bedroom apartment corridor
Corridor

The foyer has original 18th century marble floors. A fine painting depicting an austere King Umberto I of Savoy welcomes you. The foyer has one window, and also an old bed side table and a chair where one can put objects and keys. As is typical of 18th century apartments, the kitchen is immediately to the left. Leading from the kitchen, turning to the left, is the main corridor of the apartment (right photo)

The original marble flooring continues along the main corridor. The first door to the right in this picture is the entrance to a small patio (3 x 2 meters, 10 x 7 feet), for fresh air. The second door to the left leads to the master bedroom. At the end of the corridor, you turn left to the second double/triple bedroom and ensuite bathroom; and right to the sitting/dining room .

Like its twin apartment, the elegant sitting room boasts the original 18th century sparkling "graniglia" marble floor (photos below). The exquisite design and detail of the floor attest to its antique origins.

Sitting dining room

Dining / sitting room: the dining area

The dining area has a large wooden table with six chairs, a fine quality desk with chair, and two set of drawers (one is behind the table and cannot be seen well). From the two windows the ivy-mantled facades of the Panisperna palaces can be seen.

The sitting area has a sofa (which can be used as a double bed, with quality wooden slats base - not springs), comfy armchairs, and two quality wooden tables. A large antique tapestry hangs on the wall, while elegant lamps, fine paintings, and a mirror complete the furniture. The sitting room has a telephone, Hi-Fi stereo with tuner, CD and double cassette player, and a large colour TV with satellite aerial allowing you to watch CNN and other major international channels.

The next photos show the bedrooms .

Double bedroom

Double bedroom

The master bedroom has a large built-in wardrobe (its door has been left open in the photo), a sparkling ensuite bathroom with shower (see photo below with opened bathroom door). There is a king size bed, bedside tables with lamps, a cherrywood desk with antique mirror, a Venetian set of drawers and chairs.

The room is accessorized with lamps and fine paintings, creating an atmosphere of elegance. High stucco ceilings, a sparkling chandelier and graniglia marble floor complete this delightful room.

The master bedroom also has a larger balcony with table and chairs, enabling you to eat "al fresco." Many guests of the apartment enjoy a leisurely breakfast on this balcony, which can also be accessed from the main corridor of the apartment.

Second bedroom with open bed

Double bed open

At the end of the first corridor described above, there is a second corridor to the left with two large built-in wooden wardrobes (first photo). At the end is the second bedroom-a small yet comfortable room accommodating 2-3 people.

The wooden bed was made by a carpenter and can function either as a single bed with comfortable sofa (second photo), or as bunk beds with the lower one being a double sofa bed (third photo). The room can therefore comfortably accommodate two people sleeping separately, or a couple (possibly with a child in the single bed on top). The width of the double bed is 1 meter, 40 cm (4 feet 8 inches), and therefore is unsuitable for a "larger" couple.

The room also has a fine antique table (which can be partially seen under the window in the photos), and another built-in wardrobe. From the window the ivy-mantled palaces and the craftsmen shops of Via Panisperna can be seen.

The entrance to the second bathroom is at the beginning of the second corridor. It is large and well-maintianed, with bathtub and hand-held shower.

The apartment is best suited for 4 persons, ideally a couple and two children/adults. However, it can sleep up to 5/6 persons as a foldout can be added .

Monti Borromini kitchen

Kitchen (top): seen from the door

The kitchen retains many elements of the 17th-18th century including the sink and floors. It has modern appliances (fridge with freezer, fires, oven). It also includes a microwave oven. It is fully equipped with dishes, cutlery, pots, pans etc.

The two bathrooms are kept sparkling clean. The master bedroom ensuite (left) has a shower stall. The second bedroom's bathroom has a bathtub. Both bathrooms have a bidet and Swedish-type heaters (with horizontal bars) which are convenient for speedy drying of laundry.

Within the quarter there are many shops and grocery stores allowing you to cook conveniently in the apartment. The area's numerous restaurants provide both Italian cuisine (with all its variants), and cuisines of other countries (French, Chinese, Japanese and even the best Indian restaurant in town). There are also many "gelaterie" (ice cream cafes), bars, pastry shops, cozy old fashioned grocery stores, pubs and wineries for connoisseurs.

The apartment includes a brand new washing machine, a telephone (with answering machine) and electronically controlled autonomous heating. In summer, two large fans and three portable air conditioners are supplied (one for each room). There is a 27 inch, brand new colour TV (with digital satellite aerial-dish to view CNN, BBC, and all major international channels). An iron with ironing board is provided. This apartment is equipped with a brand new stereo-Hi-Fi set, with CD player, tuner and cassette player.

The palace has a large roof garden terrace (communal) where tenants can sunbathe and dine as well as hang their clothes to dry in the fresh air.
