HIGHLIGHTS: JULY

Excitement and emotion is what Rome in July is all about!

Art lovers will be deligted to hear that the Quadriennale is on again for the 15th year, "Il Quattrocento" focuses exclusively on Renaissance art, Correggio is celebrated in a retrospective, and Rome and Egypt are under the artistic microscope at Castel Sant'Angelo, to name just a handful of the best exhibitions on this month.
Other exhibitions include: the paintings and sculptures of contemporary artist Kokocinski, and the design masterpieces of Jean Prouvé.

From the art scene to the music scene... many renowned artists are on stage: George Benson, Ben Harper, Bjork, Sinéad O'Connor and Youssou N'Dour.
Italian names include Ligabue, Daniele Silvestri, Max Gazzè, Fiorella Mannoia, Pino Daniele and Subsonica. Teenagers (and the young at heart) will enjoy performances by bands like Tokio Hotel, Bluvertigo and Almamegretta.
Jazz aficionados will head straight for concerts by Stefano Bollani and Enrico Rava, world music lovers will enjoy Piero Pelù and Roy Paci & Aretuska and 80s music fanatics will get a kick out of a concert by Duran Duran.

Finally, for those who like their classical music with a pop tinge, Giovanni Allevi will be gracing us with his refined piano sounds... Staying in the classical genre, great operas such as "Aida" and "Lucia di Lammermoor" await us at the Baths of Caracalla, "Invito alla danza" takes place in the Villa Doria Pamphilj park and the "Notti romane" will spread its magic in the Parco del Teatro Marcello.

Other musical genres also move to the outdoors. Classical music is on offer at the "Anfiteatro della Quercia del Tasso" and exhilarating cabaret at "All'ombra del Colosseo"... The Globe Theatre brings us some of Shakespeare's masterpieces, whereas "Cosmophonies" will brings us musicians of the calibre of Raffaele Paganini, Ascanio Celestini and Goran Bregovic.

Finally, the fashion shows of "AltaromAltamoda" are back, the "Golden Gala" shows us the best in athletics and many other events ("Notti animate sulle Terrazze di Castel Sant'Angelo", "Lungo er Tevere", "RomaEstate", to name but a few) allow visitors to enjoy Rome's many different monuments, neighbourhoods and piazzas by night...

Until 6 Jul: Ricordi dell'antico. Sculture, porcellane e arredi all'epoca del Grand Tour (Memories of the Past. The sculptures, ceramics and furnishings of the Grand Tour era)
The 18th century was enamoured of classical art and placed it at the base of every modern artist's creativity. The 150 works on show - including ceramic pieces, paintings, drawings and etchings - help us understand how much attention is given to antiquity. Visitors will be able to admire Luigi Valadier's Callipygian Venus and Apollo of Belvedere, or the figures of Laocoon, Castor and Pollux and Bacchus and Ariadne sculpted by Francesco and Luigi Righetti. Paintings, watercolours and etchings will illustrate the figurative and cultural environment of this period. Among these the views of Rome by Panini are particularly worthy of mention. Tue-sun h9-20. €4,50, reduced €2,50

Mantegna, Perugino, Piero della Francesca, Pinturicchio, Donatello, Michelangelo, Lippi are just some of the artists featured in an exhibition that does justice to the value of Rome’s artistic output during the Renaissance. The 170 works on show are on loan from prestigious international museums and are accompanied by a large panel illustrating life in the city in the 1500s and a 3D reconstruction of the Carafa Chapel of Santa Maria sopra Minerva Church created using the application of colour optical radar technology (usually used for spatial investigations) on an artistic monument. The bas-reliefs, bronzes, coins, sculptures and paintings on display aim to get the concept of ‘Roman vistories’ across to the public by telling us about the ceremonies and festivities surrounding the historic big battles. The first section of the exhibition relates to victories and their development, from the Etruscan to the Hellenistic worlds; the second section shows images of illustrious victors and the illustrious defeated – among which Caesar, Pompeius and Octavian – and reproduces battle scenes. The last section is devoted to conquered peoples: the Greeks, the Judeans, the Dacians and the Barbarians. Until 31 Aug h8,30-19,15; from 1 Sep h8,30-19. €11, reduced €6,50

About 60 drawings and paintings, including mythical-inspired pieces such as "Danae", "Jupiter and I" and "The portrait of Ganymede", and religious works such as "Madonna del latte" and the "Four Saints", are shown as part of an exploration of the artist and the greats of Antiquity. Correggio's approach to colour and painting the seemingly impossible is poetic. His work is on show at the Galleria Borghese. Tue-sun h9-19. €10,50

Castel Sant'Angelo, lungotevere di Castello, 50. Info 066819111
Until 28 Oct: L'Egitto a Roma dalla storia al mito (Egypt in Rome from history to myth)
The exhibition aims to document the link between the two most ancient and powerful empires that ever existed, Rome and Ancient Egypt. The high number of obelisks and many Roman artefacts show how Roman art was profoundly influenced by Egyptian art. The artists of the Renaissance also gleaned their inspiration from the ancient prophets, the Great Hermes Trismegisto for example, and the fascinating and mysterious hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt. The Borgias wanted the story of Egyptian deities painted on the ceilings and walls in their rooms in the Vatican and Raphael used a semblance of Artemis Ephesia (thinking her to be Isis) on the ceiling of the Vatican's Stanza della Segnatura. An intense passion for Egypt was rife throughout the 18th century onwards and has continued on until the present day; the Americans wanted a pyramid on their dollar bill and the French unveiled the mysteries of the hieroglyphics. Musei di Villa Torlonia - Casino dei Principi. Info 060608
Until 13 Jul: Carlo Levi e Roma. Il respiro della città (Carlo Levi in Rome. The breath of the city)
This exhibition makes clear the desire for artistic renewal and innovation in the early 20th century, when art was no longer satisfied with representing man according to predetermined aesthetic canons but rather wanted to empathise with him. The exhibition displays 28 paintings by painters from the Roman School (among which Pirandello, Mafai, Scipione, Trombadori, Afro, Ferrazzi, Scialoja, Melli and Capogrossi), but above all 46 paintings by Carlo Levi (dated from 1926 to 1954). Levi's (and his followers') style evolved with the passing of time: the colours became more decisive, the brush strokes gained body, the still lifes moved closer to the Expressionistic style, the views became visionary. Levi's portraits should garner a special mention: the painter conceives of them first as a form of auto-representation and an account of our own subjectivity, and in second place, a way of establishing a dialogue with the subject represented. Tue-sun h9-19. From €5 to €9

Palazzo Venezia - Sala del Mappamondo. Via del Plebiscito, 118. Info 060608
Until 27 Jul: Kokocinski. La potenza dello spirito (Kokocinski. The power of the spirit)
A series of paintings and sculptures that explore the poetic vision of a contemporary artist who often delves into the classical world of myths (such as into the stories of Orpheus and Eurydice, Prometheus, Venus and Medea) for inspiration. This tragic, and at the same time positive, concept of destiny is only one example of Kokocinski's conceptual bipolarity. For him existence is made up of bouts of torment and ecstasy, which succeed each other with no end in sight. Tue-sun h10,30-19,30. Admission free

Museo dell'Ara Pacis, Lungotevere in Augusta. Info 060608
Until 14 Sep: Jean Prouvé. The poetics of the technical object
Jean Prouvé, artisan, entrepreneur, designer, engineer and architect and the man who most influenced the development of design. The 100 or so pieces by Jean Prouvé on show here are on loan from the Vitra Design Museum, the Centre Pompidou and private collections and all privilege function over aesthetics. Visitors can admire design pieces - such as chairs, sofas, tables, desks, school benches, beds and lamps - and also architectural pieces, draft sketches and prototypes. This is a dense retrospective dedicated to a designer who transformed prefabricated panels and aluminium cladding into something poetic. Tue-sun h9-19. €6,50, reduced €4,50

ROME WITH A VIEW

VICTOR EMMANUEL MONUMENT (Vittoriale, or Altare della Patria, in Piazza Venezia)

Love it or loathe it, few can fail to be impressed by the pompous grandeur of the Victor Emmanuel monument. Also known as the Vittoriano - nicknamed "the type-writer" by the Romans, or 'the wedding cake' from the American GIs of WW2, - this over-the-top symbol to national unity has been open to the public for the past year, but only recently has it been possible to visit the vast, labyrinthine innards of the building as well. Take this chance to marvel at the sheer scale of the construction, admire the fin-de-siècle mosaics at close quarters - and have unsurpassed 360 degree views over the city from the dizzy terraces. Entrance is free.
10am-6pm Tue-Sun, Vittoriano, Piazza Venezia (06 678 0363). Bus to Piazza Venezia (just next to Capitol Hill).

Park of the Appian way - "Archeobus"
The Appian Way or "Regina Viarum" - Queen of Roads - of ancient Rome is the best preserved of ancient roads leading to Rome. As it was forbidden to bury within the city walls, it was flanked by many impressive graves - some still extant to this day. The road is still endowed with the ancient cobblestones, and it also flanked by impressive sights: the Circus of Maxentius (second largest after the Circus Maximus), the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, the majestic Villa dei Quintili, and finally various aqueducts, some 15 meters high (Claudius aqueduct). To preserve also the landscape around the road, the entire area surrounding was transformed into a lush archaeological park.
The Appian Way is very hard to reach by normal bus or taxi, so it is best visited with the specific "Archeobus", leaving from Piazza Venezia every day at 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. You can ask information and book every day except Sat., Sun. and holidays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm – Tel: (+39) 0646954695
